The fire marshal’s office was notified of a suspicious fire Sunday afternoon in a residential building in Westdale.
Several Hamilton fire crews responded to the high-rise building at 44 Glen Rd., Near Main and Macklin streets, around 2:45 p.m., for fire alarms with multiple alarms.
At the scene, smoke can be seen coming out of a block of flats on the 11th floor. His balcony was covered in soot and his windows were broken.
The fire department said in a tweet that the fire was dropped when entering. This caused significant damage to the affected device and is considered suspicious.
Approximately three dozen tenants exited the 14-story building toward McLean amid the sound of ringing fire alarms.
Wael Abdelkader said he called 911 after noticing a smoke shot under a neighbor’s door that looked charred.
“All the neighbors upstairs, we started running together,” he said, standing next to his family. “My wife is pregnant. She was running so fast she almost slipped. We are worried about our (unit) – it is on the same floor. “
Downstairs on the fifth floor, when fire alarms rang, a curious Tristan Callahan stepped out onto his balcony.
“Rubber smell of smoke,” he said. “I knew there was a fire, so I went out and knocked on my neighbor’s door to tell him. I have my two cats there, but I didn’t have enough time to get them off the couch.
Firefighters remained on the scene at 5 p.m.
