GO Transit has released a new video showing a train crashing into an SUV in Toronto while its driver is still behind the wheel.
The incident happened at the Carl Hall Road crossing near Shepard Avenue and Kiel Street in mid-May.
In the approximately one-minute video, the SUV can be seen approaching a level crossing just as the gate closes, signaling the approach of a train.
The SUV pauses, but then pulls to the right to go around the gate.
It appears to have stopped just before the rails, but within three seconds the train enters the shot and crashes into the vehicle, pushing it out of the shot.
GO Transit says that the driver was not seriously injured in the accident and managed to get away from the scene.
However, their vehicle looked common in images shared by GO Transit.
The driver is also charged in connection with the incident.
“Most of these incidents, such as the one in the video, are preventable,” said Martin Gallagher, Metrolinx’s chief safety officer, in a blog post. “Crossings at level crossings are caused by pedestrians, cyclists and drivers who deliberately take risks or make bad decisions by mistake, habit or distraction. Everyone should be vigilant at level crossings and remember that trains run fast and can come at any time. “
Metrolinx said in a blog post that the driver was “lucky to have moved away” from the accident.
He called on all drivers to take precautions at level crossings in light of the “shocking video”.
