A street reader hits, kills a pedestrian in Toronto

A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a street sweeper truck in the northern city of Toronto on Tuesday morning.

Toronto police respond to clashes in Lawrence East and Leslie Street clashes shortly after 9 a.m.

Police said a pedestrian was hit by a cleaner and found dead at the scene.

The driver remained on the scene and was taken to hospital for examination.

“The driver was very worried and as a result was transported to a hospital and is currently there under medical care,” Inspector Jeff Basingthwaite told reporters at the scene.

It is unclear whether the truck was clearing the street at the time of the collision.

The city of Toronto says it is “cooperating fully with the police and their investigation.”

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, as well as with our employee at this very difficult time,” a city spokesman said in a statement to CP24.

Police are asking residents of the Tremont Crescent area who have video surveillance to contact them.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (416) 222-8477.
