SIU cites a post-shooting mandate involving police in Cambridge

The Special Investigations Department cited its mandate after a shooting involving police in the Cambridge area on Saturday.

A press release from SIU said that officers from the Waterloo Regional Police Service were called to the Ironstone Drive residence for a health check at around 12:25 p.m.

They said there was an interaction between police officers and a 22-year-old man, which led to one of the police officers firing his firearm.

SIU said the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

In a tweet, the Waterloo Regional Police Department warned of a “large police presence” in the area of ​​Ironstone Drive and Sandalwood Drive in East Galt.

They later updated the tweet, confirming that it was a shooting incident and there were no public safety concerns.

SIU investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual violence. They then determine if any violation has been committed and decide whether charges should be brought.

They said four investigators and two detectives had been appointed in the case.

Part of Ironstone Drive remains closed to traffic and police tape is placed near several houses.

UPDATE: As a result of a shooting incident, the SIU invoked its mandate.
