Thunderstorms will hit Shropshire as the Met Office issues a 14-hour weather warning

The meteorological service issued a yellow warning for Thursday, covering much of the country

The yellow warning covers much of the country, including Shropshire and Powys, and runs from 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.

Sudden changes in the weather are expected to cause travel disruptions and floods in several places.

In a warning, the Met Office said: “Thunderstorms are likely in some areas, especially in the afternoon and early evening. Although most places are likely to miss them where there are thunderstorms, there are likely to be up to 40mm in several places in about an hour and 40 to 60mm in two or three hours.

“These torrential rains can be accompanied by frequent lightning, while gusty winds and hail can also affect several places. The exact location of the thunderstorms will be difficult to determine, so the warning area will be reviewed and updated if necessary. “

The Meteorological Bureau also warns that “there is little chance of homes and businesses being flooded quickly, with some buildings damaged by floods, lightning, hail or strong winds.”

As roads are already heavier than usual due to railway strikes, drivers are warned to expect additional delays and interruptions in their travel due to more difficult driving conditions caused by splashes and sudden floods, which may also lead to the closure of some roads.

They also warn of the low probability of rapid or deep floods endangering lives and some communities being cut off from flooded roads, as well as the “small chance of power outages and other services for some homes and businesses being lost.” “.

The Met Office warning came when Shropshire and Central Wales enjoyed clear blue skies and temperatures of around 25 ° C.

The Thursday weather warning covers much of England and parts of Wales, reaching Cheshire in the north-west, all of East Anglia, all of South and South-East England and extending to Somerset and Cardiff in the west.
