Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has not sought the support of former President Donald Trump in his 2022 re-election campaign, Politico reported on Wednesday.

DeSantis, a 43-year-old popular Republican, will be re-elected in Florida in November. DeSantis was widespread as a potential rival to Trump in 2024, and his reluctance to gain Trump’s approval could be seen as a power game.

A source close to the former president’s political orbit told Fox News that Trump has not ruled out running for governor of Florida closer to the state’s August 23 primary.

DeSantis has consistently avoided questions about whether he plans to run for president in 2024, whether or not Trump is in the running. However, he raised his eyebrows in early June when he won the straw poll in 2024 at the annual Western Conservative summit in Colorado.

The Florida Republican won the straw poll with 71% support, while Trump received 67%. The straw poll is based on an approval system that allows those present to support multiple candidates. This was the second year in a row that DeSantis overtook Trump in the straw poll.

DeSantis is expected to win re-election in November, with polls predicting a seven-point victory over former Florida Gov. Charlie Christ, the likely Democrat candidate.

The DeSantis administration has called for a number of socially conservative policies, with the governor signing a 15-week ban on abortion by law in April.

The governor also blocked the teaching of a bunch of textbooks in public schools after his administration determined they contained elements of critical racial theory.

“Some publishers seem to have tried to paint on an old house built on the Common Core and indoctrinated concepts such as racial essentialism, especially, oddly enough, for elementary school students,” De Santis said in a statement at the time. . “I am grateful that Commissioner Corcoran and his team in the department have carried out such an in-depth inspection of these textbooks to ensure that they are in line with the law.”

The move came weeks after DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education Actwhich prevents educators from teaching children between kindergarten and third grade about gender identity or sexual orientation.
