Tory support collapse threatens “conservative Celtic periphery” in southwest, poll says

The collapse of Conservative support in the south-west of England could lead to the loss of 11 seats in the general election – and be on the verge of losing the constituency of Jacob Rees-Mogg.

YouGov found that the share of Tory votes in what they called the “conservative Celtic periphery” fell by a remarkable 19 points in the 2019 general election, leaving Boris Johnson’s party at 38 percent in the region.

The figures were released on the day of the midterm elections at the headquarters of Tiverton and Honiton in Devon, where the Liberal Democrats hope to eliminate the vast conservative majority in an area that has been a “true son” since 1923.
