Finally, you can invest in Nothing Phone 1 – provided you can join an exclusive club. Nothing has opened pre-booking reservations for its first smartphone using an invitation code system. Members of the private community go first and will have 48 hours to use their code, make a non-refundable deposit of £ 20 (approximately $ 25) and be able to place an order on 12 July. Everyone else can sign up for a waiting list that will deliver batch invitations.
If you continue with the order, nothing will be deducted from the purchase deposit and will provide an additional £ 20 credit to use for phone accessory 1 or earphone 1. The company has not yet revealed the price of the phone itself. As Nothing warned earlier, Phone 1 will not officially come to North America outside of a closed beta for a handful of private investors in the community. The device should work, but there will be no full support.
If the pre-order strategy sounds familiar, you should. The previous OnePlus outfit of the founder of Nothing Carl Pei has been using an invitation system for years. The effect may be similar. Invitation-based orders help manage limited supply (by controlling sales and improving demand estimates), while creating a cache that can stimulate demand. It’s not clear when you’ll be able to order Phone 1 on a whim, but don’t be surprised if you end up waiting a while.
