Kanye West appeared on stage at the end of the BET Awards on June 26 to honor Didi with the Lifetime Achievement Award. True to his character, Kanye covered his face with a mask and hood as he talked about how Didi had inspired him throughout his career. He even looked emotional at one point while talking about the legendary rapper.

During his long speech, Kanye even mentioned his divorce from Kim Kardashian, casting a shadow over his ex. “I am going to [Diddy] for advice to this day, “Kanye said. “He inspires so many of my choices. So many choices in my life. My wife’s choice. And here we are – thank you for that, Poof. ” Kanye laughed after making the joke and the audience cracked. Twitter was also immediately flooded with fans who expressed their reactions to the shadow.
Aside from the little reference to Kim, Kanye mostly spent time on stage at the BET Awards to thank Diddy for being an inspiration to him. “This man has been through a lot and broken a lot of doors so we can be here today,” Kanye admitted. “He broke down so many doors for classicism, taste, culture, hackneyedness. Puff, if I never told you … I love you.

Kanye also remembered receiving Didi’s old mixtapes and listening to them at his mother’s house, hoping one day to become like Puff. “This is my favorite artist,” Kanye exploded. Do you see what I’m saying? Favorite artist. Everything. Not specific production. There were so many rules about hip-hop back then, and he broke them all. And broke all the doors. And they understand contracts in a way that many of us still don’t understand. He understood money in a way that many of us still don’t understand.
Kim and Kanye actually attended Didi’s 50th birthday party together in 2019, but their marriage has since fallen apart. Kim filed for divorce in February 2021, and the two were declared “legally unmarried” by a judge in March 2022. The specifics of settling their divorce have not yet been met.
