Astros left-back Jordan Alvarez was sent off in the eighth inning of the Houston match against the Mets on Wednesday at City Field after colliding with short stop Jeremy Pena on a Dominic Smith ball to a shallow left field.
Penya, who caught the ball for the first time since the inning, appeared to hit Alvarez in the face with his hand while the left fielder rushed to try to play with the ball. Both players fell to the ground, where Alvarez remained for several minutes while being cared for by manager Dusty Baker and Astros training staff. Eventually, he got to his feet, but a medical cart was called to take Alvarez off the field. Penya also left the game after the collision, leaving on his own.
Alvarez is in the middle of a dominant season in the record, beating .316 / .412 / .658 with 23 Homers and 56 RBIs.
