Lansing, Michigan – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday that the first possible case of monkeypox in Michigan has been discovered in Auckland County.
MDHHS wrote in a press release that the resident of Auckland County is currently isolated and does not pose a risk to the public. According to the CDC, there are 306 confirmed cases in 27 states across the country.
Monkeypox is usually transmitted through close contact, or through large droplets, or through direct contact with another person. According to experts from the University of Michigan, monkeypox is associated with smallpox.

The incubation period (time from infection to symptoms) for monkeypox is usually 7-14 days, but can range from 5-21 days.

Within 1 to 3 days (sometimes longer) after the onset of fever, the patient develops a rash, often starting in the face and then spreading to other parts of the body. The disease usually lasts 2-4 weeks. In Africa, monkeypox has been shown to kill about 1 in 10 people who become infected.

Treatment / vaccines
There is currently no proven safe treatment for monkeypox virus infection. For the purpose of controlling the monkeypox epidemic in the United States, smallpox vaccine, antiviral agents and vaccine immunoglobulin (VIG) may be used.
