Omicron covid-based booster photos will be released this fall

This fall, vaccine manufacturers will begin launching booster vaccines against coronavirus, better suited to combat the current phase of the pandemic.

Two days after outside experts voted in favor of a new vaccine adapted to protect against omicron, the Food and Drug Administration announced that autumn photos will include a component of BA.4 and BA.5, omicron subvariants are gaining popularity in the United States.

The change shows that the FDA is trying to be more agile in its efforts to keep up with the changing virus. The exact formula has not yet been tested in humans, but studies show that vaccines designed to fight a previous version of omicron moderately increase the short-term immune response in humans compared to more injections than the original. The agency will depend in part on this data as it reviews the new vaccines.

The FDA advised companies on Thursday to create a two-part vaccine for an autumn boost campaign. One part of the vaccine will be the original formula based on the version of the virus that spread worldwide in early 2020. The other part will be based on the BA.4 and BA.5 omicron sub-variants, which currently make up half of the strains. which are sequenced in the United States.

It is quite possible that BA.4 and BA.5 will be overshadowed by new variants by the fall, but it is hoped that a new injection will help boost immunity as they are closer to where the virus is today. A Pfizer scientist showed data to FDA advisers on Tuesday that in mice, a vaccine based on these versions of omicron appears to generate a stronger immune response.

Coronavirus vaccine follow-up

For a year and a half, coronavirus vaccines, based on the original version of the virus, provided stable protection, especially against severe disease. But immunity declines over time, and the virus has proven cunning, creating a growing Greek alphabet of new variants that are more contagious and dexterous to escape from the human immune system.

“As we enter the fall and winter, it is critical to have safe and effective vaccine boosters that can provide protection against circulating and emerging options to prevent the worst effects of covid-19,” the FDA said in a statement.

Experts are concerned that such a subsequent decision must be taken on the basis of very limited data. It is possible that the change will provide a noticeable increase in people’s protection against serious diseases and possibly infections, but it is not certain.

“I think the FDA is making the best guess here about what they think is the right thing to do, and it may or may not be good,” said John Moore, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell Medicine. “We don’t know and we don’t have a real way to know.”

The modified vaccine will be used as a booster. People who are still receiving their first vaccines will continue to receive the original version of the vaccine.

People who are unvaccinated or not boosted should not delay vaccination in the hope of getting a new vaccine, especially given the high levels of transmission, said an FDA official who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak. People will still potentially qualify for a booster in the fall, and all vaccines are best for preventing serious illness and hospitalization.

The federal government announced Thursday that it has agreed to buy 105 million doses of Pfizer’s restarted vaccine for $ 3.2 billion. At $ 30.50 per dose, this is a premium over the initial contracts the government signed for the original vaccine in 2020, when vaccines were $ 19.50 per dose.

Pfizer said the price of the vaccine is likely to rise after the pandemic, and this may not be the ceiling.

“We expect this to be only the second pricing between pandemic pricing and future commercial pricing,” analysts at SVB Securities Research wrote in a note analyzing the announcement.

Moderna President Stephen Hoge told the FDA’s advisory committee that his company would take until late October or early November to create a vaccine based on omicron’s BA.4 and BA.5 versions. It was not clear on Thursday what the company’s schedule would be for delivering renewed doses to the United States.
