The grandmother, who looked after baby Brandon Cuelar while his mother was at work, took the child into her apartment and returned outside for a short time to unload groceries, the San Jose Police Department said.
While the baby was alone, a man entered the apartment and took the child, the SJPD reported.
Cuelar was last seen wearing a white long-sleeved blouse with dinosaur prints on it, police said. Investigators described the suspect as a man wearing black pants, a navy blue shirt and gray shoes with white trim. He was also wearing a black face mask and a gray baseball cap, police said.
Police released photos from a surveillance video showing a man walking on the sidewalk with a covered car seat that investigators say contained the child.
“Today, someone is walking with a three-month-old baby they didn’t have yesterday,” SJPD Sgt. This was said by Christian Camarillo at a press conference on Monday. “If you have this baby, please return this baby to his mother. We can deal with the consequences after that.”
The suspect appears to be a stranger, and neither the baby’s grandmother nor mother recognized the man, Camarillo said. According to Camarillo, the child’s mother is talking to police. He said the child’s father was currently in prison.
FBI agents and police officers went door-to-door on Monday night to seek information and potential witnesses, the SJPD tweeted. The FBI’s kidnapping response team is helping with the investigation, according to Camarillo.
“Everyone who is a mother or a father loves nothing more than you love your child,” Camarillo said.
An amber signal has not been issued because police have no information on the vehicle or registration number of the suspect, Camarillo said, but an alert has been activated for those missing from the California Road Patrol.
Police are also asking people in the area to check their bell cameras and surveillance videos to see if they have any footage of the man wearing the car seat.
