The Supreme Court has dealt a blow to President Biden’s plans to tackle climate change by limiting the government’s power to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.
In a 6-3 defeat along ideological lines yesterday, the conservative justices ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not have the authority to regulate emissions of polluting gases from power plants that contribute to global warming. The decision is a disaster for the Biden administration, which has pledged to cut America’s greenhouse gas emissions in half by the end of the decade and reach a carbon-free energy sector by 2035.
