Severe thunderstorms tracked across the prairies Wednesday night and the Environment and Climate Change (ECCC) confirmed at least three tornadoes had occurred in Saskatchewan.
The first tornado appeared around 3:05 PM CST near Manitou Beach.
A second tornado was confirmed near Margot at approximately 4:55 PM CST.
The third tornado spawned around 5:25 PM CST near Kimrick.
Eyewitness reports and photographs were used by the ECCC to confirm the tornado. Damage to power lines and trees is currently being reported in the Foam Lake area.
The three tornadoes have been given a preliminary rating of EF-0, but that could change as the investigation continues.
“Environment Canada meteorologists are looking for pictures of any damage these tornadoes may have caused. If you have any information regarding these events or to report severe weather at any time, please call 1-800-239-0484, email skstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet #skstorm,” the ECCC states .
The storms also brought reports of very large hail across the region. Pictures from western Manitoba showed baseball-sized hail hitting communities in the storm’s path.
Wednesday’s tornadoes bring the total number of confirmed prairie tornadoes for the year to at least eight. The Prairies average about 42 confirmed twisters each year. 2021 was an extremely quiet year for tornado activity across the region, with only 15 tornadoes confirmed between Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
