Police arrested in a fatal crash in a Hwy street race. 427 earlier this month

Police have arrested a driver wanted in connection with a deadly collision in a race on Highway 427 earlier this month.

The crash of a car happened in the southern lanes of the highway near Finch Avenue shortly after 7 pm on April 9.

Police said earlier that they believed the dead, a 29-year-old Brampton man, was racing another vehicle shortly before the crash.

Investigators released an image from a surveillance camera of the other vehicle on April 11 and asked the public for help in identifying its driver.

However, weeks passed without arrest.

Ontario police confirmed on Tuesday morning that they had now arrested a 26-year-old man believed to be behind the wheel of the vehicle.

They say they are continuing to search for a second man who was a passenger in the vehicle.

“The two passengers in this vehicle stopped for a moment at the crash site and then fled when police and emergency services arrived,” said an OPP sergeant. Kerry Schmid said in a video statement posted on Twitter, along with the detained vehicle. “We believe that the three of them knew each other, and I can tell you this morning that the driver of this vehicle has been arrested and is now facing a list of charges.

A 26-year-old Harrison Vijayawikrama suspect from Brampton has been charged with dangerous driving, causing death and failing to stay at the scene of the collision that led to his death.

Schmid said the investigation was ongoing and that police wanted to talk to anyone who might have information about the identity of the second person who was traveling in the vehicle.
