Nick Kyrios and Stefanos Tsitsipas finished well a day after a fiery third-round match at Wimbledon

LONDON — A fiery Wimbledon third-round match between Nick Kyrios and Stefanos Tsitsipas resulted in fines for both players.

Kyrgios defeated Tsitsipas 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7) to book a place in the fourth round on Saturday. But he was fined $4,000 for “sonic obscenity” after being hit with a code violation during the match.

His opponent Tsitsipas was also fined $10,000 for “unsportsmanlike conduct” after being handed two ball-tampering code violations during the match.

The heated encounter left Tsitsipas fuming, saying Kyrgios had an “evil side” and must have been a “school bully” because of the way he behaved throughout the match.

Kyrgios, who will open play on Center Court on Monday against Brandon Nakashima, hit back at Tsitsipas, calling him “soft”. The highlight of the match came in the second set when Tsitsipas threw a ball into the corner stands, narrowly missing a spectator. Kyrgios called for Tsitsipas to be timed out but play continued with the Australian eventually closing it out.

It is Kyrgios’ second fine of this tournament after he was fined $10,000 for “unsportsmanlike conduct” following his first-round win over Paul Jubb. Kyrgios admitted he spat in the direction of a booing fan after dispatching Jubb in five sets.

“He literally came to the game not even supporting anyone, just to cause disrespect. That’s fine, but if I give it back to you, that’s just the way it is,” Kyrgios said. “I’ve been dealing with hate and negativity for a long time, so I don’t feel like I owe this guy anything.”
