The world’s oldest gorilla, Fatou, celebrated its 65th birthday on Wednesday with some delicious treats.

Guardians of the Berlin Zoo, where the gorilla lives in the western plains, say reaching that age makes her “almost like a legend.”

“Wild gorillas have a lifespan of about 40 years, and at 65, they are the oldest living gorilla in the world for some time,” said Christian Aust, who cares for the monkeys at the zoo.

Fatu celebrated his birthday by eating a special cake of boiled rice and cottage cheese, vegetables, raspberries and blueberries.

Western lowland gorillas are a “critically endangered” species, meaning they face a high risk of extinction in the wild.

Their numbers have declined due to disease, poaching and damage to their natural environment.

“Fewer and fewer animals live in the rainforests of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo,” according to the Berlin Zoo.

Gorillas are the largest species of monkeys weighing up to 200 kg, eating between 15 and 20 kg of leaves, grass, bark and fruit.
