Israel says it will test a bullet that killed journalist Shireen Abu Akleh over Palestinian objections

Israel has said it plans to conduct forensic tests on the bullet that killed Shirin Abu Akle, hoping to end the standoff between Israeli and Palestinian authorities over who killed the prominent Al Jazeera reporter. The Palestinian Authority, which handed over the bullet to a US security coordinator on Saturday, said it did so on the condition that Israel not participate in any forensic examination. In an interview with Army Radio on Sunday, an Israeli military spokesman said the test would be conducted by Israeli investigators, “with an American presence at all times,” according to Reuters. Washington officials did not immediately comment on the situation, which was sparked by the May death of 51-year-old Abu Akleh. The Palestinian Authority accused an Israeli soldier of deliberately targeting her. Israel maintains that if a member of its armed forces was behind it, Abu Akle’s death was not intentional; it is also suggested that a Palestinian gunman may be responsible.
