19 LI high schools among the best in the country: US News & World Report

Nineteen public high schools on Long Island are among the top 1,000 in the country, according to the US News & World Report’s annual list released on Tuesday.

Leading the local list is the Jericho High School, which ranks 109th, up from last year’s 147th place, consolidating the status of the school in Nassau County – with about 1,200 enrolled – as a frequent recipient of the award. The results of the national “Best High Schools” were under embargo until 12:01 on Tuesday.

This year’s Best High Schools ranking nearly 18,000 public high schools at the national, state, and local levels.

Along with Jericho, 13 other high schools in Nassau County are in the top 1,000 – many of them on the list in previous years. They are: Great Neck South High School (195), Garden City High School (214), Manhasset High School (215), Herricks High School (327), Syosset High School (328), North Shore High School (Glen Head) 406), Roslin High School (415), Whitley School (Old Westbury) (474), Great Neck North High School (503), Plainview-Old Bethpage High School John F. Kennedy (691), John F. Kennedy High School (Belmore) (712 ), Paul D. Schreiber High School (Port Washington) (733) and Bethpage High School (973).

What should I know

  • Nineteen public high schools on Long Island are among the top 1,000 in the country, according to the US News & World Report’s annual list released on Tuesday.
  • Jericho High School was the best finalist on Long Island, ranking No. 109.
  • US News has adjusted its calculations for the “Best High Schools” to take into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the 2019-2020 school year.
  • School rankings are available on the US News & World Report website.

In Suffolk County, five are in the top 1000: Cold Spring Harbor High School (298), Half Hollow Hills High School East (Dix Hills) (392), Harbourfields High School (Greenlawn) (564), Half Hollow Hills High School West (Dix) Hills) (759) and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School (944).

The methodology focuses on six factors: readiness for college, proficiency in reading and math, performance in reading and math, underserved student performance, breadth of college curriculum, and graduation rates. College readiness specifically measures participation and performance in advanced and international bachelor’s exams. Inadequate student performance focuses on students who are black, Hispanic, or low-income. For the first time, scientific competence and productivity were also included in the methodology for countries without data available for scientific evaluation.

In addition, while the six indicators that ranked each school were the same as those used in the previous three years, US News adjusted its calculation to take into account the COVID-19 pandemic. As most states close personal training schools in March 2020 – usually just before most states conduct assessments – the US Department of Education has granted an exemption allowing all states to opt out of testing for the 2019-2020 school year. The ranking of the best high schools for 2022 can be compared with previous estimates from 2021, 2020 and 2019, as the methodology has changed only slightly from the previous three years, according to US News.

Contrary to government estimates, ranking factors related to graduation and college readiness this year include data for 2019-2020.

Nationally, Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia, ranked first. The 19th-place Townsend Harris High School in Flushing was the best school in New York State on the latest list.

Last year, 20 high schools in Long Island were among the top 1,000, with Jericho topping the list. We could not contact school staff before the list was published on Tuesday. Jericho high school students often receive the highest honors in many national academic and scientific competitions. On the county’s website, officials said the Jericho High School is proud to offer a comprehensive program, from academic to extracurricular to personal support.

In September, Jericho was among six on the Island to be named a “Blue Ribbon School” by the U.S. Department of Education, which recognizes the high school as a “Model High School.”

Jericho also made the top 100 in the US News & World Report 2022 for STEM schools across the country, ranking 88th. Manhasset High School was the second local school to break the top 100 STEM schools nationwide, ranking 78th. US News looked at the top 1,000 public schools in the top high school rankings and then assessed the participation and success of their students in advanced science and math tests.

“By considering factors such as graduation and student underrepresentation, families can use this information to learn more about their local schools,” said Eric Brooks, chief data analyst at US News, for the 2022 rankings.
