Santa Monica Studios was tight-lipped about God of War Ragnarök’s release date. And with all the game’s delays, many speculated that it had been pushed back to 2023. However, Sony put those fears to rest, confirming that God of War Ragnarök will be released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on November 9, 2022. Pre-orders are now open on July 15, 2022 at 10 am local time.
The company revealed this date through a cinematic trailer. It’s short and has no gameplay, so don’t expect a long dive, but it sets the tone and hints at a massive wolf-like boss fight.

The second half of this announcement came with a full unboxing of the game’s two physical special editions: the Collector’s Edition and the Jötnar Edition, both of which were previously leaked via insider Tom Henderson. Ryan Hirst, who provided Thor’s motion and voice capture, and Santa Monica studio art director Raffaele Grassetti walked viewers through the unboxing video, each picking up one of the boxes and explaining its innards. However, there is also a standard edition and a digital deluxe edition. Sony didn’t specify pricing for any of these versions, so it’s possible they won’t be known until July 15, when pre-orders go live.
The Standard Edition is pretty, well, standard. It’s worth noting though, because of the pre-order bonuses it comes with, which are also included with pre-ordering the other versions. Pre-ordering unlocks the Risen Snow armor for Kratos and the Snow Tunic skin for Atreus.
Digital Deluxe is available digitally only. Users with the base edition can spend $10 to upgrade, and those who pre-order will also get the two aforementioned skins. This version comes with:
- God of War Ragnarök Full Game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
- Kratos Darkdale Armor
- Atreus Darkdale Attire (Cosmetics)
- Darkdale Blade Handles for Chaos Blades
- Darkdale Ax Grip for the Leviathan axe
- God of War Ragnarök Official Digital Soundtrack
- Dark Horse Digital Mini Artbook
- Avatar set
- Theme for PlayStation 4
The Collector’s Edition is the smaller of the two physical versions. It comes with everything from the digital deluxe edition as well as:
- Printed voucher code for God of War Ragnarök full game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
- The Knowledge Keeper Shrine Box
- Steel Book Case (No Game Disc Included) – The God of War Ragnarök Steel Book Case features interpretations of the Bear and the Wolf.
- Two-inch Vanir Twin Carves – In the same style as the Huldra Brothers Atreus toy carves from the God of War (2018) Collector’s Edition, the God of War Ragnarök Collector’s Edition completes the set with the Vanir Twin Carves.
- Dwarf Dice Set – This set comes with a set of quality woodgrain finish dice in a dice pouch with the Yggdrasil symbol on the outside.
- 16″ Mjölnir Replica – Highly detailed replica of Thor’s signature weapon from God of War Ragnarök.
The Jötnar edition is the largest and comes with everything from the previous editions and the following:
- Printed voucher code for God of War Ragnarök full game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
- Bear McCreary Music Seven-inch Vinyl – This includes two songs by composer Bear McCreary.
- Falcon, Bear and Wolf Pin Set – Featuring Fay, Kratos and Atreus respectively, this pin set symbolizes the family of our heroes.

It was quite clear that something regarding the Ragnarök release date was coming soon. Bloomberg reported that Sony settled on a November date and will announce the exact date at the end of June. Twitter account PlayStation Game Size found that Sony has internally moved the game’s date from September to December, signaling a fall release window. The game was also recently rated on a Korean rating board. Insider The Snitch tweeted a hint about God of War hinting at an upcoming release date announcement. Santa Monica Studio’s Corey Barlog even began tweeting vague teases in the run-up to this announcement in addition to decorating his profile in multiple cryptic ellipses and dots. The September release date for The Last of Us Part I also left room for Sony to release another major first-party game later in the fall.
However, it seems that the announcement did not go according to the original plan. A tweet from Barlog and a less cryptic Twitter account suggest it has been delayed. He then bluntly stated that a reveal event would not be coming on June 30th. According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, it appeared that the game itself had not yet been pushed, which some speculated after reading too much into this delayed announcement. However, that didn’t stop people from harassing people on the development team. The studio even sent out a tweet condemning the toxic behavior.
