The first sequel to Avatar will be called Avatar: The Way of the Water, Disney announced on Wednesday at CinemaCon, perhaps the biggest indication so far that the long-delayed film will actually be released on December 16. And we may have even more potential evidence soon, as the first teaser trailer is set to debut with Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which premieres on May 6.
Here’s Disney’s synopsis for the film, which is rather vague:
The action takes place more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Water Path begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the troubles that follow, the length they take to endure each other in safety, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
I would like to draw your attention to this language “starting to tell”, because The Water Path is not the only Avatar movie we are looking forward to. Avatars 3, 4 and 5 are also in the works, with each coming out about two years after the one before it. I’m not quite sure what to expect, but I hope they’re good; after all, director James Cameron once said that sequels would make you shit with your mouth wide open.
The first Avatar was released in 2009 and remains one of the highest grossing films of all time. But if you’re a little vague about the details of the film – and I can’t blame you if that’s the case – Disney will re-release “Avatar” in theaters on September 23.
