Vandals interfere with system 911

The ability of Summerland residents to dial 911 from landlines is at risk of a rash of vandalism, hitting the Internet and television equipment in the community.
Police say they have responded to complaints from utility providers over the past four weeks about “mischief” with the Internet and television equipment. The vandalism caused more than $ 10,000 in damage and sometimes prevented landlines from calling 911 until repairs were completed.
Const. Dane Lyons tells Castanet that the local 911 system is fully operational now, but the vandalism continues. He could not say whether the telecommunications equipment was specifically targeted, but noted that the suspects appeared to intend to damage the equipment rather than steal it.
“The Summerland RCMP is asking for public assistance for any information that could lead to the identification of a suspect,” said Capt. Sean Hall of the Summerland RCMP. “The maintenance and operation of the 911 lines is our priority №1.”
