Bottas will start the Austrian Grand Prix from the back of the grid after a power unit change

Ferrari’s new powertrain components will see Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas start from the back grid for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix.

The Finnish driver, who retired from the British Grand Prix, took his fourth internal combustion engine, fourth turbocharger, fourth MGU-H and fourth MGU-K, third control electronics and fifth exhaust (without exceeding his exhaust allocation) with the result penalties to put him last on the grid for the Grand Prix.

The grid penalties will only come into effect for Sunday’s Grand Prix, meaning qualifying will determine where Bottas will start for Saturday’s sprint – in which points are up for grabs for the top eight finishers.

McLaren’s Lando Norris also took a host of new powertrain components for this weekend’s race, but the driver did not exceed his parts allocation and will therefore not be penalised.

Four drivers – Bottas, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Zhou Guanyu – took a new gearbox for this race, with none of these drivers receiving a penalty.
