The concept of a fixed link between the island and Labrador remains a priority for the provincial government after being contested by successive governments for decades.
Millions of dollars were spent in the 1970s and blasting was even carried out in the Straits before the project was canceled in 1975.
The concept is fraught with economic uncertainty, including the infrastructure needed on the Quebec side of the border and questions about whether the link will be widely used since passengers will have to cross the St. Lawrence and drive along the north coast of Quebec before crossing into Labrador.
Labrador Affairs Minister Lisa Dempster says the idea is something the government is still considering, especially now that the Trans-Labrador Highway is finally complete.
She says the pre-feasibility study has provided a number of presented options “that we can move forward with”. “These things are going to happen,” says Dempster.
