The father of a child who died in a mass shooting at a school in Parkland, Florida, interrupted President Biden’s Monday event to pass a bipartisan gun bill.
Manuel Oliver, who tweeted criticism of him before the event, was escorted out after yelling as Biden spoke. Oliver’s Twitter bio says he is the father of Joaquin Oliver, who was one of the victims of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
It’s unclear exactly what Oliver said during the event, which was held on the South Lawn of the White House.
“The word HOLIDAY has no place in a society that saw 19 children murdered just a month ago,” Oliver tweeted ahead of the commemoration. “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.” Neither me nor Joaquin.”

Biden paused during his remarks as Oliver’s interruption began and tried to get him to back down before the man was removed.
“Sit down and you’ll hear what I have to say,” Biden said.
“We have one. Let me finish my comment. Let me speak,” Biden added before the event continued after a brief but rare interruption on the White House grounds.
Rows or protesters during a presidential speech are rare due to tight security at the White House. A protester in 2006 disrupted an event with former President George W. Bush and then-Chinese President Hu Jintao, earning her criminal charges.

Dozens of members of Congress attended Monday’s event, including Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who led the negotiations on behalf of Republicans. Cornyn managed to get a total of 14 Senate Republicans to vote for the bill, crossing the House floor.

Also Monday, Biden and others on stage said the bipartisan bill, called the Safer Communities Act, should be just the first step toward a complete ban on assault weapons.
“Now is the time to galvanize this movement because it is our duty to the people of this nation,” Biden said. “We live in a country awash with weapons of war.”

Biden discussed the damage that combat weapons can do to people and the requirements for the military before they are given weapons. He said it made no sense to allow civilians to have the same weapons.

“There’s no point. Assault weapons should be banned. They were banned,” Biden said. “I am determined to ban these weapons again.
