“The situation is very difficult. There is a big problem with water, food and other supplies.”
The besieged commander continued: “Save the Mariupol garrison. Provide us with the extraction procedure. Today is not 1940. It is 2022. People here will simply die, the wounded will die.
“Those who are alive now will be killed in battle. The city is almost wiped off the planet.”
On Wednesday, Russian forces smashed huge steel mills, leaving Mr Volina and his troops.
Petro Andryushchenko, the city’s assistant mayor, said there had been no air strikes. This was despite Russian President Vladimir Putin saying there was no need to storm the plant after declaring victory in Mariupol.
Mr Andryushchenko said: “The airstrikes on Azovstal are not subsiding. There is no ceasefire, but attempts to storm again and again. Despite the statements (from Putin).
“At the same time, street fighting continues again in the sector between the management (buildings) of the Azovstal plant next to the street.”
