In the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver sparked the campaign of Pennsylvania Senate nominee and television personality Dr. Mehmet Oz.
It’s no secret that Oliver has a bone with Dr. Oz. In 2014, the British-American host spent 16 minutes in a segment outlining the scientific controversy surrounding Oz and the food supplement industry. Oliver continues to make negative mentions of Oz’s pseudo-scientific claims in episodes over the years.
Then it would be appropriate to throw Oz in the deep fryer if the controversial daily television doctor ever runs for a key seat in the Senate that could change the balance of Congress.
Oliver began by questioning Dr. Oz’s main residence. Although the Ohio-born retired doctor is applying for a Pennsylvania office, social media often presents Oz more than 200 miles away at his North Jersey mansion. Oliver called it “Eric Adams’ Special”, referring to the previous scandal with the incumbent mayor of New York, where it is said that the then candidate for mayor lives in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
The Emmy-winning host revealed that he is also aware of Oz’s proximity to New York, as his talk show offices are directly opposite the hall last week. The grumpy Oliver made his staff raise a giant alligator that held its middle finger directly to their offices to express contempt for alleged medical malpractice.
“It really seemed like a good way to greet each other every morning,” Oliver told Oz and his staff.
Oliver then documents several of Oz’s awkward video attempts to contact Pennsylvania voters: one Senate candidate complains about high vegetable prices at local Redners, another mutters about rising oil prices as he pumps gas and finally, one with a barely consistent Oz praises Pennsylvania high school wrestlers.
Oliver says there is no way Oz can sympathize with working-class voters over rising food and gas prices because of his multimillionaire status. After the intervention, Oliver revealed a brazen video published in 2019 of Dr. Oz driving a wakesurf in Italy to Gritz’s song “My Life Be Like” to reinforce this break.
“The truth is, his life is like that because he’s damn rich. Which means he can do things like that, but what he can’t do is stand in front of gas stations and pretend to be personally affected by those numbers, “Oliver said.
Realizing that his anger had been misdirected to the staff of the Dr. Oz Show, Oliver acknowledged some regret for the alligator stunt with the throwing of his middle finger and apologized.
“This campaign actually taught me something because I talked a lot of nonsense about Dr. Oz’s show and I did it because it was constantly awful, but what’s clear now is that I didn’t appreciate how hard his staff had to work. every day to make sure it’s not worse, “Oliver said.
He had to abandon his show to run for the Senate, and if any of his staff returned to our office in the coming weeks to clear things up, we actually left a new special message about them to our alligator: “I.” I’m sorry. It looks like a terrible nightmare. Because he really does. ”
