The trenches, which look like mass graves discovered in satellite images taken near Mariupol, could contain up to 9,000 civilians, Ukrainian authorities say.
Images released by the American company Maxar Technologies on Thursday show more than 200 graves by the road and near an existing cemetery in Manchush, 12 miles west of Mariupol.
Mayor Vadim Boychenko accused the Russians of “hiding their war crimes” by taking the bodies of civilians out of the city and burying them there.
The Mariupol Municipal Council said the number of bodies could be up to 9,000 in a publication in the Telegram news app. Maxar said the photos show that work on the new site, which began, began between March 23 and 26 and has been expanded
