A woman was rescued by two fire crews after falling headlong into a vault toilet while trying to pick up her cell phone at a park in the Olympic Peninsula, Washington.
The woman in her mid-40s used an outbuilding in Mount Walker, a popular tourist destination, on April 19, when the incident occurred, according to the Brinon Fire Department.
The vault toilet is a waterless toilet without water, usually placed in outdoor areas such as campsites – so named because the toilets store waste in an airtight vault underground.
After putting her phone in the toilet, the woman disassembled the seat and the body of the toilet in an attempt to reach her, the fire department said on Facebook. She used a dog leash to try to “catch” him before using it to support herself as she tried to grab the phone.
But the attempt failed and she slipped into the toilet. Fortunately, after 20 minutes in the vault, she was able to find and use her phone to call 911.
Crews from the Brinon Fire Department and the Quilcene Fire and Rescue Service arrived on the scene and pulled her to safety.
According to the firefighter, the uninjured woman was washed and given a Tyvek suit to wear. But she refused any further medical help and continued on her way.
“The patient was extremely happy not to be overwhelmed by toxic gases or get injured,” the department said.
