BERLIN, April 26 (Reuters) – Germany will officially approve the supply of Gepard anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine, a senior lawmaker from one of the ruling coalition parties said on Tuesday.
Johannes Vogel, of the Liberal Free Democrats, confirmed a report in the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung that Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht would offer weapons at a meeting Tuesday with allies at Rammstein Air Force Base in Germany.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has been criticized at home and abroad for his government’s failure to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine, has promised to supply anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons from German military stockpiles, which he described as “defensive weapons”.
