A Wisconsin couple who mysteriously died in “unexplained” circumstances were trying to make a dangerous art form popular with TikTok, investigators said.
Tanya Rodriguez, 44, and James Carolfi, 52, were killed in an electric shock during a fractal burn, a process of creating intricate designs on wood using high-voltage electricity, according to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department.
On Wednesday, April 6, firefighters were sent to fire at the structure in Roselville; they initially failed to find homeowners and found evidence to suggest bad games.

“That’s why we initially treated the incident as a murder,” Marathon County Deputy Chad Bileb told a news conference.
After finally extinguishing the flames, they found the two dead bodies in the garage.
“Due to the nature of the incident and the significant damage caused by the fire, it was incredibly difficult to determine the cause of death and the sequence of events,” Bileb said.
After a two-week investigation, they learned that both victims died before the fire broke out – and that it was accidental, “presumably caused by electric shock, fractal burning of wood.”

“Fractal wood burning is a technique in which high-voltage electricity is used to burn lightning or a tree-like pattern in wood that is soaked in a chemical solution,” Bileb explained. (example of the photo above)
The fire, he said, began in the garage where the couple worked on their project before spreading to the rest of the home. Fractal wood-burning equipment, he added, was probably responsible for both the electric shocks and the ensuing fire.

“It was a tragic incident,” Bileb said. “And in light of this tragedy, we would like to educate the community about the dangers of fractal wood burning, an art form that has gained popularity on social media sites such as TikTok, Facebook and YouTube.
He said future artists usually reassign a high-voltage transformer – usually taken from a deconstructed microwave oven – to send electricity through the wood soaked in chemicals.
The process involves connecting the power of the microwave oven to nails driven into the board via jumper cables – which the description alone should be enough to make most people deviate.
“This process is extremely dangerous and should be carried out only by trained specialists,” the MP warned. “We will warn the public to refrain from this.”
Bileb credited the pathologist for solving the mystery – who recognized the injuries after seeing them before; the couple were not the first people to die trying it.
“It’s very beautiful, to be honest,” added the art form deputy. “But this should only be done by professionals.”
