Aiden Hutchinson seems ready for a smooth transition to the NFL, playing for his hometown of Detroit Lions, whose training facility is a 30-minute drive from his parents’ home.
“Maybe I live in the basement,” he joked Friday in Alan Park, Michigan.
Detroit selected former Michigan and Dearborn defender Devine Child as No. 2 on Thursday night and welcomed him, his parents and his two sisters back to Motor City less than 24 hours later.
“I feel like a dream,” said his mother, Melissa Hutchinson. “We were going to acclimatize wherever he was, but Detroit is special because he’s a hometown boy from elementary school, high school, college, and now he can stay home with the Lions.”
Aiden Hutchinson grew up in nearby Plymouth, Michigan, and plays football in high school about five minutes from the facility where he will train and train as an NFL player.
“To think I’m a lion is like a wild dream,” he said. “I’m sure one of these days will hit me.”
The Lions have taken on many goals over the years, advancing only once in the playoffs after winning the NFL title in 1957, and this is the only victory since the season was three decades ago.
Hutchinson remembers the 0-16 team season in 2008, the lowest point of the long-suffering franchise.
“There aren’t many great memories,” he said.
Detroit is trying to recover again, hoping general manager Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell can make all the right moves for a team that has averaged just four wins in the last four years.
The Lions entered the NFL Draft with an additional pick in the first round, acquired as part of Matthew Stafford’s trade with the Los Angeles Rams, and used the asset to bet in Las Vegas on a player they crave.
Detroit advanced to the starting round to draft James Williams at No. 12, dropping the final pick in the first round, No. 32 overall and a third-round pick for Alabama’s wide-ranging successor and a place in the middle of the second round.
“If we have the sentence and we have the entrance, we know we will be aggressive and take this player,” said Holmes. There aren’t many of them, but fortunately Jameson was one.

Seattle Seahawks new team Charles Cross says he is betting on himself that he has chosen no agent to start his NFL career.
Cross was selected number 9 in the first round of the Seahawks and was presented at the team’s facility on Friday. Cross said he had set up a team around him to help with business decisions – and specifically pointed out his business manager, St. Omney, who was with him on Friday – but that team did not include an agent.
“I just had to bet on myself,” Cross said. “Bet on yourself and save some money in the long run.”
Cross said he has spoken to several former Mississippi teammates who have chosen to play in the NFL, and this has helped solidify his decision.
“Only receiving their contribution and insight really helped me make my decision. “I feel like I have a great team around me,” said Cross.

Entering Round 2, the Big 12 are still waiting for their first player to be selected.
The conference was the only one in Power Five without a choice from the first round. This was the second year in a row that the Big 12 were ruled out.
Prior to 2021, the conference had at least one participant in the first round each year since it was formed in 1996 as a merger of Big Eight and Southwest Conferences.
Among the top 12 players to be selected in the second round are Iowa quarterback Brice Hall, Baylor’s Jalen Peter and security guard Perion Winfrey, vanguard Nick Bonito and midfielder Brian Asamoah, all from Oklahoma.
The Big 12 had 22 players selected last year. Oklahoma offensive player Thevon Jenkins, the 39th overall pick from Chicago, came first.

Finally, a quarterback was selected in the NFL 2022 draft.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have chosen University of Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett with his 20th overall pick on Thursday night.
The Steelers were in the quarterback market after Ben Rotlisberger retired last season.

Seattle tackled the offensive line, with Mississippi tackling Charles Cross in ninth place in the first round of the NFL Draft.
With a good size and length of 6 feet-5, 310, Cross is considered by some scouts to be the best blocking pass in this project. The Seahawks like to focus on running and will probably have to with quarterback Russell Wilson now in Denver, but Cross is learning fast.
The Jets used 10th place to add to their host group with Gareth Wilson of Ohio. His ability to pass from the side, plus the speed of detachment and the ability to find the end zone, all this should help the young attacker.
