Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been officially announced

The developer of Call of Duty Infinity Ward has already confirmed what was widely expected: his new entry in the long-running series of Activision shooters will be titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Yes, this is exactly the same name as the classic of the same studio from 2009 – which, with apologies, is already 13 years old.

Infinfity Ward revealed the name last night via Twitter, along with the game’s logo. It looks more like MIIW to me than MWII. Others, meanwhile, said it reminded them of Nine Inch Nails.

This new Modern Warfare 2 is the fifth major game in COD’s Modern Warfare subseries. It’s also a sequel to the 2019 restart of Modern Warfare – which at least had the decency of having a slightly different name from the original 2007 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Looking ahead, Activision has also announced a new free game called Call of Duty Warzone, which will be unveiled later this year – although the extent to which the existing Warzone will be continued or reworked is unclear.

The franchise is then expected to take an unprecedented break in 2023, without a new big-budget edition this fall.

Earlier this week, Activision released new player numbers that show that interest in Call of Duty has declined significantly over the past 12 months, while the publisher has been shaken by allegations about his work practices. Meanwhile, employees in the studio of Call of Duty Raven Software continue to unite.
