Glendale police chased the driver of a black Kia on Thursday night. It was later revealed that the suspect had a mental crisis during the prosecution.
The suspect was described as a man with a baseball cap who was first spotted by police making donuts at the intersection of Western and San Fernando, sparking harassment.
A few minutes after the chase, the suspect started turning the vehicle again, making donuts, after officers met the vehicle at another intersection.
After a short time, Glendale police decided to stop the chase and track down the driver due to public safety concerns.
As the suspect continued to drive in a strange way, although he was not being chased by officers, they were spotted flashing lights, hazards and a unique light kit equipped with stroboscopes. They often drove on the wrong side of the road, bypassing impassive traffic and pushing other drivers in the area.
They were under surveillance for some time before California Highway Patrol officers began pursuing the suspect around 10 p.m.
Immediately after the resumption of the pursuit, the suspect detected a non-participating vehicle before leaving the scene, when they then briefly entered the SR-60 before chaotically crossing all lanes of the road to the entire highway 101.
At about 10:15 p.m., the suspect re-entered the streets of Lymert Park, where he stopped at an intersection and rolled down his window to mock police before taking off again.
Authorities were allowed to attempt a PIT maneuver around 10:20 p.m., and although several unsuccessful attempts failed to stop the car, the suspect’s KIA Stinger rear bumper was partially torn off and could be seen hanging on as the harassment continued.
While all this is happening, CHP officers are in contact with the family of the suspect, who they claim is in the midst of a mental crisis and does not believe he is armed.
The suspect continued his reckless driving before returning to an area believed to be close to their home, where officers were waiting for them.
He got out of the car around 10:45 pm, when he was immediately detained.
