I guess in the end it was inevitable that she would catch me. After decades of locking the horns with her, Nicola Sturgeon has finally managed to prove that I don’t exist and never existed. Officially, I am inhuman.
For reasons that will be familiar to most sturgeon observers, Scotland’s Prime Minister has decided that when the time comes to count, there is no way it will allow Scotland to be part of the UK’s 10-year exercise to find out how many we are there. are. After all, she really doesn’t approve of the UK. In fact, there is hardly an official policy on these islands that she is happy to share with England, Wales and Northern Ireland – unless it suits her.
Thus, to be different, she said that since the pandemic was still raging, it was too much to ask the Scots to fill out a census form in 2021, even if everyone in England and Wales succeeds, and that Scotland’s census will be postponed until 2022. So the forms had to come out on 28 February and be returned by tomorrow (but then a four-week extension was agreed because so few responded).
This left me in a kind of predicament. I was officially eliminated from the study for England and Wales because I did not live there last year and could not participate in the deferred Scottish. Now that I’ve moved the lock, supplies and laptop to London, where the census has already taken place, I haven’t written to either because I missed both.
To be honest, I doubt that the first Minister of Scotland deliberately depersonalized me or even knew he was doing it. At least I think so: the way she handles those who cross her, you can never know for sure. Just ask Alex Salmond.
Doing everything the Sturgeon way, not the way it’s done in the rest of the UK – especially London – has been her hallmark for the eight years she’s led. And while she will insist that this is better for the people of Scotland, the evidence is against her.
Scots may have free university tuition, but this was nothing more than a mechanism for the country’s middle class to fill their boots while leaving less financial support for the poorest students.
Sturgeon even has his own tax policy and is gradually introducing his own social benefits scheme, although some are so complex that it leaves them to the Department of Labor and Pensions. Her defense policy is so disastrous that she has had to join the UK line so far, although she regrets deploying Trident submarines in her backyard.
Yet her census policy has become one of the most striking examples of her “My or Not” attitude. It was so home-cooked that it denied the existence of a large English population in Scotland, allowing only recipients to declare themselves “Scots” or “other Britons”, although “Irish” and “Poles” were among the other white ethnic groups included. There were also controversies about guidelines that inform people that they can choose whether they are men or women based on their gender identity rather than their biological sex.
This forced removal from London has had the most disastrous effect on Covid, especially when it comes to mortality in the nursing home and the closure of the Scottish economy. But at least she was wise enough to look forward to all of the UK’s financial aid over the past two years, even if there was no “thank you” note for Boris Johnson.
Sturgeon’s actions may have denied my existence, but it is clear that she plans to continue to cast a giant shadow over UK policy. As a result, now that I don’t exist officially, I’m just going to have to find a way to be born again to stop her.
