Coast Guard races after alleged “sea mine” spotted in Weston-super-Meyer

The Coast Guard was called to Weston-super-Mar yesterday (April 30th) after an alleged “sea mine” was spotted on shore. An explosives disposal team saw the site in the bay around 10.45am and were taken on a hovercraft to be inspected.

However, as they approached the site, it turned out to be an old metal buoy. A post posted on the Weston-super-Meyer Coast Guard’s Facebook page said: “Well, the day has been full of events for us coastal people!

“First at 10:45 we were asked to track yesterday’s possible munitions in Baystone Bay. The team of Plymouth EOD (destruction of explosive munitions) had doubts that the site could be an old sea mine!

“They were taken out on the hovercraft for inspection, and fortunately it was thought to be an old metal buoy from years past!” After she was dug up, she was taken out of the beach rangers for disposal.

“After stopping the hose and some food, all assets were stopped at 3:10 pm and returned to their families. The Facebook post also said that the team was later called in to deal with another incident in which a woman was injured.

At 4.18pm, the woman contacted the rangers after tripping over a walk with her husband on the beach. She injured her ankle and could not walk, and the Coast Guard rushed to her aid.

The Facebook post said: “The team made its way and assessed her injury, unfortunately a broken ankle. Busy and ready to go, with the help of several boys from the Weston Fire Station, we carried her on a stretcher to her husband, who was waiting to take her to the hospital for further treatment. “
