A video posted by Ukrainians on social media allegedly shows an attack in which Russian forces appear surprised and defenseless.
In addition to losing nine generals, Putin has seen 36 colonels killed in just over two months in battle.
Military experts say this is an astonishing depletion rate.
Putin has sent his chief of defense, General Valery Gerasimov, to take personal command of Russia’s offensive in eastern Ukraine.
But Simonov’s death, along with 100 Russian troops, and the reported loss of armored vehicles show another setback for the Kremlin leader, who aims to announce the success of his mission on May 9, Russia’s Victory Day.
Simonov from the Kirov region graduated from the Tomsk Higher Military Command School of Communications and is considered a leading Russian military specialist in electronics.
