The monthly sums have been added up, and they paint a grim picture of how common car theft has become in Mississauga and Brampton.

According to Peel police crime figures, more than 1,600 vehicles have been stolen so far in 2022, including 413 vehicles recently stolen between March 30 and April 28.

The following map shows where the last 413 vehicle thefts took place:

Of those 1,600+ in total, at least 705 of the thefts were reported in Mississauga, while at least 655 were committed in Brampton (approximate numbers).

While most of these incidents were listed as car thefts, other types of vehicles – including motorcycles and trucks – were also attacked.

In early April, police broke up a car theft group that had been operating in the Toronto, Peel and Halton regions for several months.

Three men from Brampton and one from Mississauga are now facing charges following a police investigation in various jurisdictions, which led to the recovery of 20 stolen vehicles worth $ 1.5 million.

In response to the high rate of vehicle theft, the Peel Police Council presented a proposal on Friday (April 29th) to “explore opportunities to reduce car theft in Peel”.

Introduced by Board Chairman Ron Chat and unanimously supported by the board, the Peel Police Council and Regional Police Council are expected to bring to the masses partners from the federal, provincial and private sectors to tackle car theft at every step of the process.

“The issue of car theft is a top priority for many members of the community,” said board chairman Ron Chata. “As a board, we want the community to know how seriously we take this issue and that we want to do everything in our power to tackle car theft.”

For now, residents are advised to keep their vehicles safe with the following tips: Keep car doors locked and windows closed, provide adequate lighting in the area of alleys and entrances, and park vehicles in a locked garage if possible.

Other tips include:

  • Install GPS trackers in vehicles if possible
  • Install steering wheel locking systems
  • Keep car keys / weights away from the outside walls of your home
  • Consider storing keys / locks in Faraday boxes
