Investigations are ongoing to establish exactly where the violation took place. Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Wilson said: “We are at a very early stage of the investigation as we seek to establish where the incident took place and who was involved.

“Fortunately, the man’s injuries are not life-threatening, and although I understand that this is a shocking incident for the local community, we believe that this was a deliberate attack. We have a large police presence in the area.

“I would encourage anyone who knows about this incident or has any information about firearms in their local community to come forward and tell us what they know. There is no place for weapons on the streets of Merseyside, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. ”

Photographs taken by ECHO show a police cordon at the entrance to the recreation area on both Hawksmoor Road and Lower Lane. The blue police tape did not allow people to enter, and officers patrolled the entrances.

A number of people told ECHO that police did not allow people into the park as long as staff remained on the scene. An eyewitness told ECHO that they had been refused to walk their dog in the park because of the ongoing incident.
