Derek Boyd was sentenced to 16 years in prison for attempted murder.
The ruling was handed down by Supreme Court Justice Mark Garson in Stratford, Ont. courtroom Tuesday.
“The offender has a clear and demonstrated history of controlling, manipulative and violent behavior,” Garson said.
The Crown was seeking life in prison for the 38-year-old Londoner, while the defense sought a sentence of 10 to 12 years.
“Let me be clear, the victim in front of me is alive today because of his actions,” Garson added.
In a coherent statement read out last year, Crown Elizabeth Wilson said in February 2020 that the victim – who had cut off contact with Boyd the day before – was waiting for roadside assistance at Little Falls Primary School in St. Mary’s after noticing a breach in the tire of her car for rent.
Boyd then jumped into the vehicle, holding a large steak-like knife, and stabbed her in the right abdomen and shoulder.
The victim managed to escape through the passenger door and rushed into the lobby of her son’s primary school. She was taken to Victoria Hospital, where emergency surgery was needed to repair the damage to her abdomen.
“She’s fighting for her life,” Garson said. “She is fighting for herself, her son, her mother and her family. The loud and irrefutable message that this court must send both to this offender and to like-minded people is simple, intimate partners have the right to end the relationship. They have the right to do it safely. “
Garson also ordered a life ban on weapons, a DNA warrant for a major crime, a warrant for lack of communication with the victim and counseling while in prison.
Prior to his arrest in the case, Boyd had a previous criminal record, including a life ban on weapons of sexual violence. He was also well known in the London fitness community as the operator of two grocery stores.
More than two years later, the victim is said to continue to suffer from nightmares and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Garson finished his decision by addressing the victim directly.
“You are brave, resilient and an inspiration to others. Your voice has been heard, “he said.
With deductions from the time served, Boyd will have approximately 14 years and nine months after his 16-year sentence.
