May 4, 2022, daily update, 09:00
Acres: 160 104 acres – Restriction: 20% – Total staff: 1 208
Start date: Peak of the Hermits: April 6, 2022; Calf Canyon: April 19, 2022
Cause: Peak hermits: spot fires from prescribed burning; Kalf Canyon: under investigation
Location: Located near Galinas Canyon – Fuels: Heavy mixed conifers, ponderose pine, shrubs and grass
Highlights: The constant air attack on the fire yesterday allowed firefighters to engage aggressively on the ground. The protection of the structure, the construction of the line and the shootings will continue today. Please observe all closures and allow fire extinguishers to work safely. Firefighting and public safety will continue to be the number one priority.
Operations: Firefighters continued defensive fire yesterday to remove fuel near structures and a secure line. Air resources flew all day in support of these missions. Fire activity is expected to increase in many places beyond the fire, as winds change throughout the day. Six structural groups beyond the fire will focus on removing fuel, building a line and deploying other protection measures around homes and communities. The structural groups are populated with means of protection in each department of the fire. These resources will work wherever homes, cabins and other valuables are threatened, moving between areas of increased fire activity throughout the day. Crews will continue firing, removing fuel between the defensive lines and the uncontrolled front of the fire to slow the spread of the fire. Numerous helicopters, LAT (large air tankers) and VLAT (very large air tankers), as well as six scoop planes continue to supply water and delay the firing line. We remind you that the planes with shovels submerge water from Lake Isabel, which is in a private property. No audience is allowed in this area. The Temporary Flight Control Area (TFR), which operates over the fire area, has been expanded to include the city of Las Vegas and the airport in Las Vegas. The area also restricts the flight of drones or drones. If a private drone invades the fire area, it will require a pause in all air operations and will impede the progress of the firefighting, putting firefighters at greater risk.
Evacuations: Scan the QR code here for the latest evacuation map or visit the ArcGIS Map. The sheriffs of San Miguel and Mora County are asking all residents of the area to stay on high alert for changes in evacuation status and road closures. It is imperative to observe the closures and to follow the evacuation orders. Please follow the Facebook pages of San Miguel County and Sheriff of Mora County for the latest updates at

The wind gusts will be between 35 and 40 miles per hour. Maximum temperatures will reach the lower 50s by the mid-60s. The minimum values of relative humidity will be from 8 to 15%.
Restrictions: The Santa Fe National Forest has extended the closure order due to the fire to include the entire Pecos / Las Vegas Ranger area and introduced Stage 2 fire restrictions throughout the forest. The full order and closure card are available at www.fs.usda.gov/detail/santafe/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprd3802009.
Smoke: The communities on the east and immediate south sides of the fire will receive the greatest reduction in air quality. The Las Vegas Valley will see Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) today become Unhealthy tonight. Mora will average USG with periods of unhealthy late afternoon to tonight with winds blowing smoke to the east. Air quality around Rosiada, Pendaris and Buena Vista should improve by late afternoon with cleaner winds from west to northwest. The corridor of the NM 518 highway will usually have periods from USG to unhealthy until tonight. An interactive smoke map allows you to zoom in on your area to see the latest smoke conditions.
