Samsung introduces faster and more efficient UFS 4.0 storage

Samsung has introduced its next-generation UFS 4.0 storage, which advertises improved data transfer speeds and increased energy efficiency over UFS 3.1.

UFS or Universal Flash Storage is the backbone of many Android phones, tablets and other portable technologies. Faster than other forms of flash storage, it improves charging time and in tandem with a high-end processor ensures that your flagship smartphone feels fast.

Samsung Semiconductor has already confirmed several details about UFS 4.0, which may be used in the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, but will more likely be used in the Galaxy S23. This new standard for flash storage offers significant performance gains over UFS 3.1 with maximum data transfer speeds of 23.2Gbps per tape. Samsung says this is twice the top speed of 11.6 GBps of UFS 3.1 and will allow 5G smartphones to process AR and VR more efficiently.

WONDERFUL: Samsung has developed the industry’s most efficient Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 4.0 storage solution, which has been approved by JEDEC®’s board of directors. What is UFS 4.0 and what does this mean for the future of storage? Read on to learn more. pic.twitter.com/4Wxdu0J2PD

That’s not all, as sequential read speeds reach 4200 MB / s with sequential write speeds up to 2800 MB / s. Samsung says this was made possible by 7th-generation V-NAND technology. In addition to these speed increases, energy efficiency is said to be 46% better with UFS 4.0 than UFS 3.1. This can help ensure that your next smartphone has an even longer life with a sequential read speed of 6MB / s per mA.

This new storage technology is based on the standard JEDEC specification and is set to be used in upcoming flagship smartphones, along with its use in AR, VR and even automotive applications.

Samsung said UFS 4.0 will go into mass production in the third quarter of 2022 and will be available with a capacity of up to 1TB. We will potentially see leading smartphones from the end of 2022 come with UFS 4.0 storage and this hints at the next wave of Samsung smartphones and folders using the fastest available flash storage.
