2022 Elections: Elections open in the United Kingdom

There are restrictions on elections and referendums on what the BBC and other broadcasters can report in the UK.

The BBC has a legal obligation to ensure fairness between candidates in our coverage.

This code is, in effect, part of the BBC’s election guidelines, which are designed to help our journalists provide impartial and honest reporting on campaigns and policies.

On election day, the BBC does not report any of the campaigns from 00:30 BST until the end of the elections at 22:00 on any of its platforms or social media.

But the BBC’s website should not remove archived reports published before this period.

While the elections are open, it is a crime to publish something about the way people voted in these elections.

From 22:00 the normal counting of the elections is resumed.
