WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Police on Highway 24 and I-680 at Walnut Creek caused major traffic delays in Contra Costa County on Wednesday.
East Highway 24 from Lafayette to Walnut Creek was closed for nearly four hours. Law enforcement responded to a man on the ledge of the highway. The man was subsequently detained, officials said.
The highway was reopened at around 6pm, but drivers had previously been told to use “alternative routes”, police said. “Heavy traffic in the area.”
Drivers can expect residual delays.
Several off-ramps and nearby streets were closed, but by 6 p.m., those streets were reopened, Walnut Creek police said.
The connector on Highway 24 to the northern I-680 remained closed until the evening commute to work began. Walnut Creek Police assisted the California Highway Patrol in this situation.

SkyFOX flew near nodes and seemed to see a man sitting on the ledge of the highway. It appears that law enforcement is negotiating with him. The CHP confirmed that the man was detained shortly before 6 p.m.
Traffic resumed after being supported for miles. Drivers tried to get off the highway through congested streets.
