Jurgen Klopp faces Diogo Jota’s header as Liverpool consider a change in midfield

Liverpool maintained their quadruple mission with a memorable victory in the Champions League semi-final over Villarreal on Tuesday.

Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane found the goal after the Reds went from 2-0 to a 3-2 victory in Spain and claimed 5-2 overall. Liverpool will now seek to overtake Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table – at least temporarily ahead of Pep Guardiola, who entertain Newcastle United on Sunday – when they host Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night.

And here we are looking forward to the changes that Jürgen Klopp can make when his team is next in action.

Matip calmed down

After significantly turning his back line in the last few games, Klopp can withstand such a temptation this time.

Alison Becker was the mainstay between the sticks as Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to Villarreal after Joe Gomez was impressively replaced last weekend in Newcastle. Costas Tsimikas was patiently waiting to start as a left back with Andy Robertson first choice.

A change could see Joel Matip return to replace Ibrahim Konate to partner Virgil van Dyke as a central defender, with the couple changing regularly. Gomez is another option, as is Rhys Williams.

Henderson to return?

One surprise at Villarreal was Jordan Henderson, who started on the bench. Then the captain will probably return to the starting lineup against Tottenham, although Nabi Keita recovered from a bad first half with an impressive performance after the break.

Curtis Jones and James Milner – who impressed the start in Newcastle – both also came out as substitutes in Spain and are pushing for a place in the XI, although Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara have established themselves in the engine room.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has not played in the last four Premier League teams until Harvey Elliott has played in the league since February.

Firmino’s question

The power in depth in attack was again shown on Tuesday with the contribution of Luis Diaz from the bench, the Colombian is now pressing hard to start against Tottenham.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have been almost regular players for the past few months, although Diogo Jota remains an option on both the left and center.

Roberto Firmino often does well against Tottenham, with Liverpool awaiting his recovery from a nasty foot problem, while Divok Origi and Takumi Minamino offer other alternatives.
