The bad news for Liverpool is that European Cup finals, repeated in quick succession, often lead to the same winner. Real Madrid, for example.
There are nine different replays in the history of the European Cup. Milan and Benfica faced off in 1963 and 1990. Milan and Ajax competed in 1969 and 1995. Ajax and Juventus met in 1973 and 1996. Real Madrid and Juventus fought in 1998 and 2017. Real Madrid2 and Liverpool198 collided in.
In each of these examples, at least 19 years have passed between the two games, and thus the teams are different in everything but name.
But in five cases, the European Cup finals were repeated in quick succession. Real Madrid against Liverpool will be the first show to be held three times and as seen before, this difference of only four years or less between matches offers an interesting idea of what is changing and what remains the same in the meantime.
The bad news for Liverpool, beating the Real Madrid finalists in 2018, is that the European Cup finals are repeated as soon as the others usually lead to the same winner. Only once was this not the case – and that was when the Reds themselves lost to AC Milan in 2007 after beating the Italians two years ago. And usually Los Blancos cause successive heart attacks of the same team.
