A cyclist died in an alleged collision and running at a busy intersection

A cyclist died after being hit by a car at a busy intersection in Bolton in an alleged collision and running.

Emergency services rushed to the A673 Chorley New Road after the collision shortly before 5 a.m. yesterday morning (Thursday, May 5). The accident happened at the intersection with A58 Victoria Road.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead on the spot. According to the Greater Manchester (GMP) police, a gray VW Polo fled after the collision, but was later found and a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of death from dangerous driving.

A GMP spokesman said: “Unfortunately, a man died after a constant collision in Bolton yesterday morning (May 5, 2022). Officers were called shortly before 5 a.m. to signal a collision involving a vehicle and cyclist on Chorley New Road and Victoria Road in Horwich.

“Emergency services have arrived and the cyclist, a man in his 50s, was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene. A gray VW Polo fled the scene, but was later found and a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of death from dangerous driving. He was released on bail pending further investigation.

“Closed roads were temporarily introduced while officers conducted an investigation.

Sergeant Andrew Page, GMP’s Major Conflict Investigation Division, added: “Our thoughts are with the human family, which is understandably devastated by this news, and we are doing our best to get the answers they deserve. A man was arrested at the scene and after questioning yesterday he was released on bail pending further investigations.

“We are already following a number of lines of investigation and we would urge anyone who has information, or anyone who has a record from a board, to let us know, as it can help with our investigation.
