Fifty years after an epic wrong decision that may have taken more than any action in modern American history to promote a devastating cultural war, the U.S. Supreme Court seems finally ready to do the right thing. If it is ready to break its 1973 precedent Rowe vs. Wade, as an impressive leak from the inner sanctuary suggests, this will not take control of women’s bodies and start a dystopia of The Maid’s Tale, as hysterical politicians, hyperventilating hacks and celebrity-hungry celebrities have screamed. Instead, it will do what the constitution provides for: return decisions on laws and ethics on complex and controversial issues such as abortion back into the hands of voters and their elected representatives, where they should never have been.
