Dave Chapel attack suspect pleaded not guilty to several counts of crime

The man accused of attacking comedian Dave Chapel on the stage of the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles is facing several criminal charges, City Attorney Mike Foyer said on Thursday. The announcement comes hours after authorities said the 23-year-old suspect, identified as Isaiah Lee, would not be charged with a felony.

Lee is accused of a battery, possession of a weapon with intent to attack, unauthorized access to the stage area during a performance and performing an action that delays an event or interferes with the performer, according to Foyer.

Lee pleaded not guilty to all four charges on Friday, according to CBS Los Angeles.

During the Chappelle show on Tuesday night, Lee ran into a comedian and aimed a weapon at him, which was later identified as a replica of a pistol with a knife blade. Lee was arrested on Tuesday night after being treated for his injuries at a nearby hospital and is now on $ 30,000 bail.

His public defender said he needed to be released from prison in order to gain access to mental health services and be housed in public housing, but a judge denied the request, CBS Los Angeles reported. The judge also said that if he paid bail, he must stand at least 100 yards from Chapelle. If convicted, Lee could receive a maximum sentence of 18 months, according to CBS Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Attorney’s Office received the case Thursday after the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office reviewed the evidence and refused to charge Lee with a crime.

Chapel was not injured in the attack. A spokesman for the artist said he was “fully cooperating in the active police investigation into the incident”.

“Chappelle’s performances at the Hollywood Bowl were epic and record-breaking, and he refuses to allow last night’s incident to overshadow the magic of this historic moment,” Sims said.

Tucker Reals and Zoe Christen Jones contributed to the report.
